MGR Papers 2 (Fasting)

Q For MGR #2 (means of grace), make sure that you have first done the assigned readings, which includes Jung's chapter plus your choice of one reading on Fasting. After reading these chapters, view the corresponding video in the daily schedule. (You may have already done these on the day you studied Fasting.) Now, you will be ready to practice Fasting (see below for details of your fast). After your exercise of fasting, write a one-page reflection chronicling your experience. Remember to identify Jung's chapter and the one additional author read at the top of your document. Practicing Fasting: Your fasting exercise will be a 24-hour food and media fast. The easiest way to do this is starting after lunch one day through the beginning of lunch the next day. While avoiding chewable foods, you may have juices, smoothies, pureed soups. PLEASE drink lots of water. Stay well-hydrated! For the media portion of this same 24-hour fast, refrain from using any type of electronic device (i.e., Internet, iPad, iPod, radio, movies, iPhones (or other smart phones), and anything else you were hoping I wouldn't mention. The goal is not to just "get through the assignment," but to recognize those things that interfere with our relationship with God and also how deeply we have become dependent on them instead of Him. If you have any questions about this, please bring these to our video conference session.

The fasting exercise had been difficult for me to complete. This is because I had been constantly tempted to eat food and use electronic devices. I had water and juices mostly during my fasting period. However, I also prayed during my fasting exercise. During my prayer, I had been tempted several times to use materialistic things. During my prayer, I had also been tempted several times to eat my favorite food items. I had understood that the evil one had been constantly trying to make me break my fast or lose concentration during my prayer. My favorite food items had been coming in front of my mind constantly. This had been extremely tempting and disturbing for me.
